Who has never enjoyed the frenzy of a brass band?
Inherited from the old British Empire, the brass bands belong now to the tradition in India and appeal to their audience as everywhere else, whatever the circumstances are: national or religious celebrations, popular festivals workshops or life events such as weddings. In India, no marriage is without a brass band! Mumbai Brass Band is an authentic Indian brass band, from the city of Birmingham: Miles away from Mumbai, but traditions are still deeply rooted.
Gurmail Singh Lackhanpal aka Gubzy, tabla/dhol player and world fusion specialist, is the artistic director of this brass band. His father and forefathers were musicians from Hosiarpur/Punjab, exponents of both folk/bhangra and classical Indian music.
Sharing his life between UK & India, Gubzy has performed with artist of different persuasions, such as Malkit Singh, Apache Indian, Shin DCS, Hans Rah Hans, Manmohan Warris, Sheema Mukherjee, AS Kang, Balwinder Safri, Beverly Knight & many other artists.
With a thorough knowledge of his own musical traditions and his accidental experience, he gathered the best musicians from different famous bands of Birmingham, made a special selection of traditional folk and film songs and included the structures of the North Indian bhangra music.
All instruments are: Dhol, Tabla, Trumpet, Trombone, Soprano Sax, Tenor Sax Bass & Snare drum, The brass are accompanied by formidable percussionist with contagious rhythms and virtuous improvisations in an exciting mixture of Indian folklore, popular film music and Punjabi bhangra music.
The result is of high quality, unique, groovy, giving birth to a both itinerant and on stage performance of extraordinary vitality made up of sounds and colours, gaiety and joy, integrated by Gidda & Bhangra dancers to produce a stupefying performance.
